After-Party Cleaning Cost: What to Budget and What to Book
The bill for cleaning up after a party depends less on how good the party was than on how many people came, how many rooms they used and how much went in the trash. Here is how to scope it.
- After-party cleaning for a typical home party usually costs about $120 to $300 or more, and large events with outdoor areas cost more.
- Hourly pricing of roughly $40 to $100 per cleaner is common, so crew size and hours drive the total.
- Guest count, rooms used, trash and bottle volume, spills, and outdoor areas are the main factors in the quote.
- Morning-after slots are the most requested, so book before the party rather than the morning of.
- Hello Cleaners' after-party cleaning starts from $140 per visit, with the price confirmed before you book.
Professional after-party cleaning for a typical house party usually costs between $120 and $300, with bigger gatherings, heavy trash and outdoor areas pushing it higher. That is the range a 2025 pricing guide from the commercial cleaning company Smart Janitorial gives for after-party cleanup, alongside hourly rates of $40 to $100 per cleaner.
The useful question is not "what does it cost" in the abstract but "what am I booking." A dinner for 12 and a backyard birthday for 60 are different jobs, and the price follows the work: how many rooms guests used, how many bags of trash and bottles are left, whether there are spills on carpet, and whether the deck or patio is part of it.
What the industry charges
Few national cost guides track party cleanup separately, because most companies price it as a one-time clean with extra scope. The figures that do exist line up reasonably well:
| Source | Pricing basis | Figure |
|---|---|---|
| Smart Janitorial (2025) | After-party cleaning, residential | $120 to $300 or more |
| Smart Janitorial (2025) | Hourly, per cleaner | $40 to $100 |
| Smart Janitorial (2025) | Flat fee for an event | $200 to $400 or more |
| HomeGuide | Company cleaners, two workers | $75 to $100 per hour, two-hour minimum |
| Taskrabbit | Average cleaning task, U.S. | $33 per hour; $51 in New York City, $55 in Boston and Washington, D.C. |
| HomeAdvisor | Any one-time cleaning | $100 to $400 |
The spread between those numbers comes from two things: who does the work (an individual through an app versus a company crew with insurance and supplies) and where you live. Metro areas cost noticeably more. Taskrabbit's figures make the point: its average for cleaning tasks in New York City is more than half again its national average.
Remember too that venue rentals often carry their own cleaning fee. If the party is in a rented hall or clubhouse rather than your home, read the rental agreement before booking anyone, because the venue may already include cleanup or require its own contractor.
Scope and cost by party size
The table below is our planning guide for a party in a typical home, based on the hourly ranges above. Treat it as a way to describe the job when you ask for a quote, not as a fixed price list.
| Party | Typical scope | Typical crew and time |
|---|---|---|
| Dinner party, up to 12 guests | Kitchen, dining room, one bathroom, dishes, light trash | 1 cleaner, 2 to 3 hours |
| Gathering, 15 to 30 guests | Kitchen, living areas, 1 to 2 bathrooms, floors, several bags of trash and bottles | 2 cleaners, 2 to 3 hours |
| Large party, 30 to 60 guests | Most of the main floor, all guest bathrooms, spills, heavy trash and recycling | 2 to 3 cleaners, 3 to 4 hours |
| Big event, 60+ guests or indoor-outdoor | Whole home plus patio, deck or yard, rental items staged for pickup | 3+ cleaners, 4+ hours, often quoted on site |
What drives the quote
- Guest count and rooms used. More people means more rooms touched. Closing off bedrooms and upstairs during the party keeps them off the bill.
- Trash and bottle volume. Collecting, bagging and hauling cans, bottles and food waste is often the single biggest task. Tell the company roughly how many bags you expect and whether your bins can hold them. If trash has to be hauled away because there is no room on pickup day, expect that to cost extra.
- Dishes and glassware. A full dishwasher load is quick. Sinks of hand-wash crystal and serving platters are not.
- Spills and stains. Wiping hard surfaces is standard. Carpet stain removal and upholstery work usually need separate treatment; our stain and spill response guide explains what to do the night of.
- Outdoor areas. Patios, decks, pool surrounds and yards add time for trash pickup, wiping furniture and sweeping. Say so up front; many companies only include them if booked.
- Timing. Sunday mornings and the day after holidays are the busiest slots. Some providers charge more for weekends or short notice.
Timing the morning after
Morning-after slots are the most requested, and late-night visits are rarely available from residential cleaning companies. Book before the party, ideally a few days ahead, rather than calling on a Sunday morning.
Two things should happen before the crew arrives, even if you do nothing else. First, deal with food that night. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises discarding perishables left at room temperature for more than two hours, or one hour above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Food that has sat out all night belongs in the trash, not the fridge. Second, blot any spills on carpet or upholstery so they do not set overnight. Our morning-after cleaning order covers the rest if you want to make a start yourself.
What is usually included, and what is not
A standard party cleanup generally covers collecting and bagging trash, bottles and cans; loading the dishwasher or washing dishes; wiping counters, tables and hard surfaces; cleaning bathrooms; sweeping, mopping and vacuuming; and putting furniture back in place. A patio or deck tidy is usually included only if you book it.
Commonly excluded or quoted separately: carpet and upholstery stain extraction, cleanup of bodily fluids beyond normal cleaning, repairs to damaged items, and removal or dismantling of rented tables, tents and equipment. Ask the rental company whether items must be cleaned before pickup.
How to get an accurate quote
Party cleanup is hard to price over the phone because "a party" can mean almost anything. You will get a firmer number, and avoid a price change at the door, if you give the company the same details a cleaner would want to see:
- Guest count and length of the party. Forty people for three hours leaves a different mess than forty people for eight.
- Rooms used. List them, and mention which rooms were kept closed.
- Trash estimate. A rough count of bags, plus whether bottles and cans need separating for recycling.
- Dishes. Disposable, dishwasher-safe, or hand-wash only.
- Known spills. Where they are and what they are, especially on carpet or upholstery.
- Outdoor scope. Patio, deck, pool area or yard, and whether outdoor furniture needs wiping down.
- Photos. If you are booking the morning after, a few photos of the kitchen and main room are the fastest way to an accurate price.
Ways to lower the cost
Most of the price is labor, so anything that removes time from the job lowers the bill. Close off rooms you do not need during the party, start the night with an empty dishwasher and empty bins, and put out clearly marked trash and recycling bins so cups do not end up on every surface. Before bed, put food away or throw it out, blot spills and take full trash bags outside. Twenty minutes of that the night before can take a meaningful amount of time off a crew's visit, and it makes the morning less grim for everyone.
What Hello Cleaners charges
Hello Cleaners' after-party cleaning starts from $140 per visit. That is a starting point rather than a fixed price for every home: larger parties, more rooms, heavy trash, outdoor areas and timing all move it, and the price is confirmed before you book. Regular cleaning starts from $160 if you would rather book a fuller clean a day or two later. Booking online takes 10 percent off, and our prices page shows current starting rates for every service.
When to hand it to a pro
For a small dinner, a pro may be a luxury. For anything with more than 20 guests, an outdoor area or a Monday-morning deadline, a two-person crew for a few hours usually costs less than the day you would lose doing it yourself. Hello Cleaners can take the whole morning off your hands: request a free quote when you send the invitations, tell us the guest count, rooms used and whether the yard is in scope, and if something on the agreed list is missed, you can report it within 36 hours for a re-clean.
