Move-In Cleaning vs Deep Cleaning: What Differs and Which to Book
Both are thorough, top-to-bottom cleans. The difference is whether the home is empty or lived in, and that changes what gets cleaned, how long it takes and what it costs.
- A move-in clean is designed for an empty home and goes inside every cabinet, drawer and closet; a deep clean is designed for a furnished, lived-in home.
- If you are moving into a home, book a move-in clean before your belongings arrive; a deep clean is the better choice once you are settled and the home needs a reset.
- Real costs are close: our 2026 median was $552 across 614 move-in and move-out cleans and $535 across 337 deep cleans, add-ons included.
- Customers chose different extras: inside appliances were added to 65% of move cleans, while furniture dusting featured in about 39% of deep cleans.
- Many people book both, months apart: a move-in clean on arrival and a deep clean once the home has been lived in for a season.
The difference between move-in cleaning and deep cleaning comes down to one question: is the home empty? A move-in clean is built for a vacant home and goes inside every cabinet, drawer and closet before anything is unpacked. A deep clean is built for a furnished, lived-in home and works around your belongings to remove built-up grime.
If you are about to move in, book a move-in clean. If you already live there and the place needs a serious reset, book a deep clean. The details below explain why, with real numbers from our 2026 jobs.
The core difference
Both services are more thorough than a regular maintenance clean, and both are usually booked as a one-off rather than on a schedule. Both cover baseboards, doors, switches, fixtures and the kind of detail a weekly visit skips. Where they part ways is the condition of the home and the goal.
A move-in clean is about hygiene before you unpack. Someone else lived there, perhaps for years, and you want every surface your food, clothes and towels will touch cleaned first. Because the rooms are empty, the cleaner can reach the inside of every kitchen cabinet, every closet shelf and the full floor, edge to edge.
A deep clean is about built-up grime in daily-use areas. Soap scum, grease on cabinet fronts, dust on fan blades and the gap beside the stove all accumulate in a home people live in. The cleaner works around furniture and belongings, so the inside of cabinets and closets is usually only cleaned on request.

What each one costs
On paper, a move-in clean is a little cheaper. In practice, our job records show the two land very close once customers' add-ons are included. Across 614 move-in and move-out cleans we completed between January and October 2026, the median total was $552. Across 337 deep cleans in the same period, it was $535.
| Home size | Move-in and move-out median | Deep clean median |
|---|---|---|
| Studio | $267 | $300 |
| 1 bedroom | $340 | $387 |
| 2 bedrooms | $460 | $507 |
| 3 bedrooms | $594 | $605 |
| 4 bedrooms | $689 | $785 |
| 5+ bedrooms | $1,006 | $972 |
Two caveats. These are whole-job totals, so they include anything the customer added. And our move-in and move-out cleans share one checklist and are recorded together, so the move column covers both. For most sizes the deep clean median is slightly higher, which matches what you would expect: working around furniture and years of build-up takes time. Our prices page lists the published ranges for each. Treat the medians as a realistic budget rather than a quote: a well-kept two-bedroom with no add-ons will come in lower, and a home with heavy grease, pet hair and several appliances will come in higher.
What customers add to each
The add-ons people choose show how differently the two services are used.
| Add-on | Share of move-in and move-out cleans | Share of deep cleans |
|---|---|---|
| Appliances cleaned inside and out | 65% | 47% |
| Walls and ceilings dusted and wiped | 50% | 49% |
| Deep carpet cleaning | 31% | 20% |
| Furniture dusted and wiped | 7% | 39% |
| Pet hair removal | 15% | 17% |
Move customers are far more likely to add inside-appliance cleaning and carpet cleaning, because they are inheriting someone else's oven and someone else's carpet, and an empty room is the easiest time to have it done. Deep clean customers are far more likely to add furniture dusting, because their furniture is in the room.
Which one to book, and when
- You have keys to a new home and nothing is in it yet: book a move-in cleaning.
- You are leaving a rental and want the deposit back: book a move-out cleaning, which follows a landlord's inspection checklist.
- You moved in a while ago and never cleaned properly, or the home has not had a thorough clean in six months or more: book a deep cleaning.
- You are preparing for guests, a new baby, a season change or a return from a long trip: a deep clean.
- Furniture is already in, but boxes are not unpacked: a move-in clean is still possible, but tell us what is in place, since it limits access to floors and closets.
When it makes sense to book both
Plenty of households book both, months apart. A move-in clean on arrival handles the previous occupant's traces while the home is empty. A deep clean six months to a year later catches what living there adds: grease above the stove, scale in the shower and dust on the tops of door frames. After that, a regular maintenance clean keeps it there. Our guide to deep cleaning vs standard cleaning explains how the maintenance tier fits in.
Questions to settle before you book
A clear booking gets the right service at the right price. Before you request either clean, decide on these points.
- Is the home empty, partly furnished or fully lived in? This decides which service fits and how much of each room the cleaner can reach.
- Which appliances do you want cleaned inside? The oven and refrigerator are the most common, and both are priced per appliance.
- Are there carpets that need extraction? In an empty home this is the easiest moment to do it, and it can be booked the same day.
- Are there problem areas, such as heavy grease, hard-water scale, pet hair or smoke film? Photos of these make the quote accurate.
- Will water and power be on, and how will the team get in? Without utilities, neither clean can be finished properly.
For a move-in clean, the timing matters most. The ideal slot is after the previous occupant or the seller's movers have gone and before your own truck arrives, even if that means a day or two of overlap on rent or keys. A deep clean is easier to schedule, because it can happen on any day the household can step out for a few hours. In both cases, booking a week or more ahead gives you the widest choice of times, especially at the end of the month when moves cluster.
Common mix-ups
Three misunderstandings come up regularly.
- "A deep clean will cover the inside of every cabinet." Not by default. In a furnished home the cabinets are full, so interiors are cleaned on request.
- "A move-in clean includes the oven and refrigerator." Not in the base price for either service. Inside appliances are an add-on, which is why so many move customers include it.
- "Move-in cleaning is just a lighter deep clean." It is not lighter; it is differently aimed. Because nothing is in the way, the cleaner reaches more surfaces, not fewer.
Our move-in vs move-out guide covers the third service in this family.
When to hand it to a pro
Either job is a full day or more of work for one person in an average home, and the move-in version usually lands in the busiest week of a move. If you are moving in, a professional clean before the truck arrives is one of the few moving tasks that genuinely saves time later. If you have been in the home a while, a deep clean resets it to a standard that is easy to maintain.

Frequently asked questions
Is a move-in clean the same as a deep clean?
No. Both are thorough, but a move-in clean is designed for an empty home and goes inside every cabinet, drawer and closet, while a deep clean works around furniture in a lived-in home.
Which costs more, a move-in clean or a deep clean?
Published prices start at $180 for move-in and $200 for deep cleaning. In our 2026 jobs, medians were $552 for move-in and move-out cleans and $535 for deep cleans, including add-ons.
Does a deep clean include inside the cabinets?
Not by default. In a furnished home, cabinet and closet interiors are cleaned on request; in a move-in clean they are part of the standard scope.
Should I book a deep clean or a move-in clean if I have already moved in?
If your furniture is in and you are living there, a deep clean is usually the better fit. A move-in clean works best before belongings arrive.
Are inside appliances included in either service?
No. Inside oven, refrigerator and dishwasher cleaning is an add-on for both, from $40 per appliance.
