The best time for move-in cleaning is after the previous occupant leaves and before the moving truck arrives. An empty property exposes cabinet interiors, closet shelves, wall edges and the floor under every future piece of furniture. Use that access once, in a top-to-bottom order.
Confirm the home is ready
Make sure repairs and painting are finished, utilities are on, and contractor debris has been removed. Photograph existing damage before cleaning. If there is active mold, sewage, pests, needles or other hazardous material, stop and arrange the appropriate specialist.
Start inside storage
Vacuum and wipe kitchen cabinets, drawers, pantry shelves, bathroom vanities and bedroom closets. Clean shelf supports, drawer runners and corners. Let each space dry with the door open before placing food, dishes and clothing inside.
Clean high surfaces next
Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, vent covers, door tops and high ledges before lower surfaces. Wipe switches, handles, railings and interior doors. This order keeps loosened dust from falling onto finished counters and floors.
Reset the kitchen
Clean counters, sink and faucet, backsplash and appliance exteriors. If appliances remain, clean refrigerator shelves and drawers, the oven interior when needed, and the dishwasher filter according to each manufacturer's instructions. Let the refrigerator return to temperature before loading food.
Reset bathrooms
Clean the toilet, tub or shower, sink, faucet, mirror and storage interiors. Remove visible mineral film and rinse residue. Use a suitable disinfectant on high-touch surfaces and leave it wet for the label's stated contact time.
Check windows and walls
Vacuum window tracks, wipe sills and clean reachable interior glass. Spot-clean walls only with a method suitable for the paint. Record stains, holes or water marks that remain so they are not confused with damage caused during the move.
Finish every floor
Vacuum carpet edges, closets and stairs, then clean hard floors with the correct product. Work toward the exit and let floors dry before movers enter. Put a clean mat at the door so the first load does not undo the final pass.
