Key takeaways
  • Most of Southern California and Sacramento has hard water that leaves white scale.
  • Vinegar removes scale from glass and chrome, but never use it on marble or travertine.
  • Clean ash with damp cloths and a HEPA vacuum, not blowers or dry sweeping.
  • Change the HVAC filter after a smoke event.
  • Book a deep clean after smoke, before the dry season or before guests.

Two problems turn up in almost every California home we clean: white hard-water scale on showers, glass and faucets, and, after fire season, a fine layer of smoke residue and ash on sills, screens, vents and patio furniture. This guide covers what causes each, how to clean them safely, and when a deep cleaning is worth booking.

Why California water leaves white scale

Most of Southern California and the Sacramento Valley has hard water, rich in calcium and magnesium. When drops dry on glass, tile and chrome, the minerals stay behind as white spots that build into crusty scale. It also coats the inside of kettles, coffee makers and dishwashers, and dulls the finish on faucets.

Removing hard-water scale

  • Spray shower glass and tile with equal parts warm white vinegar and water, wait ten minutes, then scrub with a non-scratch pad
  • Wrap faucets and shower heads in a vinegar-soaked cloth for 20 to 30 minutes, then rinse and buff dry
  • Never use vinegar on natural stone such as marble or travertine; use a stone-safe cleaner instead
  • Squeegee shower glass after each use to stop new spots forming
  • Run the dishwasher empty with a descaler or a cup of vinegar once a month

Cleaning up after wildfire smoke and ash

Ash settles far from the fire itself, on patios, cars, sills and anything left outside, and fine smoke particles get indoors through doors, windows and the HVAC. Wait until local air quality has improved before you start. Avoid leaf blowers and dry sweeping, which put fine ash back into the air. Wear gloves and a well-fitting N95 mask, and keep children and pets away while you clean.

  • Indoors: vacuum with a HEPA filter, then wipe hard surfaces with damp cloths from top to bottom
  • Change the HVAC filter, and wipe vents and return grilles
  • Wash curtains, throws and pet bedding; book carpet and upholstery cleaning if the smell stays
  • Outdoors: mist ash lightly, then sweep it up gently and bag it; keep runoff out of storm drains

Homes that were close to a fire, with heavy soot or damaged materials, need a specialist restoration company rather than a cleaning service.

Santa Ana winds and windblown dust

Dry offshore winds in fall and winter push fine dust through window tracks, sliding doors and screens. Vacuum tracks with a crevice tool, wipe them with a damp cloth and clean screens with soapy water and a soft brush. A clean before the windy season and another after it keeps the build-up down.

When to book a deep clean

A deep clean covers the places a regular visit skips: shower glass and fixtures descaled, vents, fans and return grilles, baseboards, window and slider tracks, and the inside of appliances. Across 18 California deep cleans so far, the median job total was $354, add-ons included. Book one after a smoke event, before the dry season or before guests arrive.

Frequently asked questions

What removes hard-water stains from shower glass?

Equal parts warm white vinegar and water, left for about ten minutes and scrubbed with a non-scratch pad; squeegee after each shower to prevent new spots.

How do I clean wildfire ash inside my home?

Once air quality improves, wear gloves and an N95, vacuum with a HEPA filter, wipe surfaces with damp cloths, change the HVAC filter and wash soft furnishings.

Do you do smoke damage restoration?

No. We clean light smoke residue and ash; homes with heavy soot or fire damage need a restoration specialist.
