  • Road salt dries into white rings and attracts moisture, so stains come back.
  • Blot light marks with equal parts warm water and white vinegar.
  • Old or recurring stains need hot-water extraction.
  • Carpet cleaning starts at $45 per room; price confirmed first.
  • Mats and boots-off rules cut the spring workload.

Salt-white tide marks by the door, grit worn into the stairs and pet hair woven into the rug: Ohio carpets take a beating from November to March. Carpet and upholstery work was part of 19 Ohio jobs we completed this year, most of them alongside a move-out or deep clean. This guide covers what removes salt stains, what professional carpet cleaning costs, and how to keep carpets cleaner next winter.

Why road salt stains carpet

Rock salt and the brine sprayed on Ohio roads dissolve in slush, soak into carpet fibers by the door and dry into a white, crusty ring. The salt also attracts moisture, so the stain can look damp on humid days and comes back after a quick vacuum. Grit that comes in with it cuts carpet fibers as you walk, which is why the entry and stair carpet wears out first.

Removing a salt stain yourself

  • Let the area dry, then vacuum slowly to lift loose salt and grit
  • Mix warm water and white vinegar in equal parts
  • Blot, don’t scrub, with a clean white cloth, working from the edge inward
  • Rinse by blotting with plain water, then press dry with towels
  • Test on a hidden corner first, especially wool rugs

This works for light, recent marks. Older stains that keep returning mean salt is deep in the backing, and that needs extraction.

What professional carpet cleaning does

Hot-water extraction, often called steam cleaning, rinses the carpet down to the backing and pulls the dissolved salt, soil and residue back out. It also lifts embedded pet hair, which came up on 10 of our Ohio jobs as an extra. Expect carpets to be damp for several hours: open windows or run the AC or a fan in humid Ohio summers so they dry fully.

Rugs, stairs and upholstery

Stairs and the landing take the most foot traffic and usually show salt and wear first, so they are priced as their own item. Area rugs near the door collect the same residue; wool and hand-made rugs need lower moisture and a gentler cleaner than wall-to-wall carpet, so tell us the material when you book. Sofas and chairs pick up pet hair and body oils over winter and can be cleaned in the same visit, which costs less than booking them separately.

Pets and allergies

Pet hair and dander settle deep in carpet pile and are not removed by vacuuming alone. Extraction lifts most of it and rinses out the allergens that build up while windows stay shut all winter. If someone in the home has allergies, book carpet cleaning in spring and again in late fall before the heating season, and vacuum with a HEPA filter in between.

What carpet cleaning costs

Carpet cleaning starts at $45 per room, with stairs, rugs and upholstery priced separately. Jobs that included carpet work had a median total of $956, but most of those totals also include a move-out or deep clean of the whole home, so the carpet share is smaller. Your exact price is confirmed in writing before you book. See carpet and upholstery cleaning prices.

Keeping carpets cleaner next winter

  • A coarse mat outside and an absorbent mat inside every door
  • Boots off at the door, with a tray to catch slush
  • Vacuum entry carpet twice a week from November to March
  • Book extraction in spring, once the salt season is over
